What does prenatal care look like at
La Clinica de Familia?
We have two models of prenatal care: traditional prenatal
care and Centering Pregnancy. You can choose which model
is the best fit for you!.
Traditional Prenatal Care
In traditional prenatal care, you will come for individual visits with a provider lasting approximately 15 minutes each. Your provider will check your vitals and fetal heart tones as well as discuss any issues pertaining to your pregnancy.
Benefits:
- Opportunity to meet several different providers in our clinic
- Schedule visits to fit your needs
Downsides:
- You may have a long wait in the waiting room depending on your provider’s schedule
- Less time available for counseling about common pregnancy and delivery questions due to shorter visit time
Centering Pregnancy
Centering Pregnancy is group prenatal care where you will have your provider visit with 6-10 other women who have due dates around the same time as you. These visits last 2 hours each and include checking your own vitals and a brief individual time with your provider followed by activities and counseling in the group setting.
Benefits:
Opportunity to build a community and celebrate your pregnancy journey with other women and share your prior pregnancy experiences if applicable
- Learn life skills like checking blood pressure
- Meet with community resources such as pediatricians, local doulas, lactation consultants, and labor and delivery staff during group visits
- Set schedule months in advance to help with planning
- Each visit will start and end on time
Downsides:
- May not be for you if group settings make you uncomfortable
Commonly Asked Questions
How often are my visits?
- In traditional prenatal care, you will have visits every 4 weeks for the first and second trimester, every 2 weeks during the third trimester, and weekly for the last month of pregnancy.
- In Centering Pregnancy, you will have group visits every 4 weeks for the first and second trimester, group visits every 2 weeks during the third trimester, and alternating group visits and individual visits with a provider every week for the last month of pregnancy.
Can my partner or support person come to my visits?
- Yes! Your partner or support person is welcome to come to your visits in either traditional prenatal care or Centering Pregnancy. In Centering Pregnancy, your support person must be one consistent person for continuity with the group.
Can I bring my children to my visits?
- Children are welcome to come to your visits in either traditional prenatal care or Centering Pregnancy, but there is no childcare provided in either setting. You (or your support person) will be responsible for your children the entire time that they are with you at La Clinica de Familia.
